Chiropractic Reduces Workers' Medical Costs

Musculoskeletal injuries are the leading cause of worker disability in the US. Each year, Americans spend billions of dollars treating conditions such as back and neck pain.

Chiropractors offer many advantages for patients with these injuries. Chiropractic is safer, carries less side effects, addresses the underlying cause of pain, and improves health and immunity. Chiropractic is also less expensive than most options for treating musculoskeletal disease and injury.

A recent study showed that chiropractic care that is offered on-site for employees at large companies could decrease employee medical costs significantly.

Researchers were hired by a health IT company to test whether or not on-site chiropractic services could reduce health-care utilization in their employees. Lower health-care utilization happens when patients visit the doctor less frequently and have fewer tests or procedures, resulting in money savings.

They found that all employees treated by a chiropractor, whether on-site or off-site, improved their back pain, neck pain, and headache. In addition, they found that employees treated at the on-the-job location had fewer doctor's visits and fewer expensive procedures. These employees had lower health-care utilization and less cost than employees treated off-site.

The study's researchers also found the possible reason for this reduced cost: On-site facilities offered more opportunities for coordination among different types of health services.
