Mechanism of Injury:
When a vehicle crashes into you when you are sitting in a car, there is a transfer of the forces from the vehicle that crashed into you, and that force gets transferred to your body. Even though there may be minimal damage to the vehicle, your neck and back can get significant shearing, bending, and compressive forces transferred to your neck and back. These compressive, shearing, and tearing forces commonly cause damage/ micro tearing to the muscles, ligaments, facets, discs, facet joints, joint capsules of the spine. This can lead to significant injury to your neck and back causing significant pain in the neck and back, with radiating numbness, tingling, and difficulty with memory and brain injury/dysfunction. People may be commonly anxious, have headaches, difficulty sleeping, and performing their day to day household duties and other activities. After a car crash many people initially go to a hospital ER, or Urgent Care facility. Many times the patient is not even seen by a doctor, but a Nurse or Physician Assistant. The patient is given pain pills consisting of Vicodin, Flexeril, or other narcotics, muscle relaxors, NSAIDS. Many times people are told to follow up with their Chiropractor if the pain persists. Sometimes the Doctor, or Nurse states that the pain should get better, but if it doesn’t to follow up with their PCP (Primary Care Provider). If the injured person does follow up the PCP, their PCP will follow up with more pain medicines, and perhaps Physical Therapy.
